Original Source Engine Dosent Work in Directx 9 mode

would anyone know why when I load any of the original source engine games - e.g. Counterstrike: Source or Half Life 2 - it goes to a screen like the attachment.
i can get the game running fine through using the -dxlevel 80 launch option through steam, but this annoys me when it should be running in dx 9 ( mean comon, the card can run dx 10 under 7/vista why would it not be running 9 on these few games on xp...)
and its only the original source engine games - games such as portal, TF2 and L4D work fine.

Il go for the usual list of suspects first.

Uninstall all your drivers then reinstall the most up to date. Run Virus / Malware scans etc etc.

Also, is it just Source games where this happens, or is it for all games. How is performance in Cod4 or WoW for example.

ok, it was the graphics drivers, was running the nvidia 185.66 beta drivers - just updated to the 185.68 set and it is now working fine
